Mission #3: Celebrate Food Ancestry

Culture or heritage plays in huge role in what we eat. After World War II, with the advent of industrialization, food made the traditional way was lost on us. Home cooked meals were replaced by frozen, boxed dinners, the microwave usurped the oven, and family dinner was kidnapped by television programming.

Mission #3: To celebrate and share the healthy eating habits of our ancestors

One of the first steps I took when changing my overall diet was to buy less canned and frozen food. I’m not against frozen food but there was a time when everything I ate was stored in either my freezer or the kitchen cabinets. My fruits and veggie fridge drawers were often full with rolls of film or bottles of nail polish. I ate as if I was living in outerspace. My family had lost touch with the food my ancestors ate and the way in which they prepared it.

Many of our ancestors ate beans (legumes), corn, fish, whole grains, fruits, squash, greens, roots and herbs. It breaks my heart to hear that countries such as China, Japan or even France have adopted the “American” way of eating; and therefore, are suffering from many of the same diseases prevalent in the U.S.

One of W.D.I.E.T. goals is to return to more home-cooked meals, healing home remedies, and general reverence of food and its powers. Processed food is convenient but it has done plenty of damage. Let’s re-visit the ways of indigenous peoples and pass along their food wisdom to our family and loved ones.

For example, at first sign of a cold, I eat a hearty meal then swallow one clove of finely chopped raw garlic to ward off viruses or infection. Raw garlic is a natural antibiotic plus antiseptic and has been used for centuries. I’ve shared this home remedy with hundreds of friends, co-workers, clients, and family members, and now, you can too!

NOTE: Always consult with your physician and remember what works for me, may or may not work for you. Plus always eat raw garlic after or during a full meal to prevent heartburn and gas then drink plenty of water.
