a stomach made of stone

by KalaLea on June 1, 2014 • Posted in Blog News The Act of Eating

Hello Beautiful Ones,

My recent interview with Brian, the passionate vegan, spurred some interests in the lifestyle. A good thing. However, a few people have made comments offline about their inability to stop eating meat and other non-vegan food items such as cheese and ice cream. After being a vegan for seven years, I totally get it. My belief is that not every one should lead a vegan lifestyle. Although, I can’t ignore the fact that

Brian, the passionate vegan

It was Easter Sunday. Not the ideal day for food shopping but I had just returned from an out of town excursion and had a hankering for some fruit and cereal. Seeing that I’m a petite woman, the Whole Foods employee yelled out, “let me know if you want me to grab something for you.” Two minutes had barely passed before I solicited his help and we began to discuss organic labeling and GMO crops.

bed stuy fresh and local (interview)

Food shopping in other neighborhoods can be frustrating, plus it takes a great deal of planning and time management; leaving little room for spontaneity. I feel compassion for those who live in food deserts and lack access to fresh and healthy food. Here’s an example of how two people changed their food game by sourcing fresh and local groceries for themselves and their surrounding community.

One afternoon while preparing lunch, I realized we were out of

#foodpoisoning

by KalaLea on March 24, 2014 • Posted in News Practicing Awareness The Act of Eating

Beautiful people, if you are eating and your head, heart or gut says to you, this tastes funny, weird, or disgusting, put the fork down immediately. Advice I should have adhered to last Sunday evening. I’m not going to mention names or places but I’m super sure that I got food poisoning from a mushroom, green bean dish that made my scalp tingle and my taste buds run for cover. At first bite, I was turned

building immunity

by KalaLea on February 25, 2014 • Posted in Blog News Preventative Health Care

God forbid, but just think if you had to have emergency surgery tomorrow, are you strong enough to be under the knife? If you had to run for your life, how far could you go without passing out? Are you equipped for marathon love making, let alone a marathon? Can you watch over a room full of sick children and return home symptom-free?

How well is your immune system functioning this season?

So far I’ve managed

to tell a lie

by KalaLea on December 29, 2013 • Posted in News Practicing Awareness
Imagine a world where people told the truth. Where honesty held court no matter the circumstance or consequence.
Would we be less fragile or more crazy? Would more people be their “true” selves? Un-afraid of ridicule or judgement? Would there be a need for Santa Claus?

Many moons ago, I used to catch myself telling lies:
Yeah, I’ve heard about that book.
I used to be the smartest girl in my class.
I’m sorry I’m late

  • Hey peeps!! Back in NYC and came across this sign for the upcoming Chile Pepper Festival in BK. I'm a true hot sauce, chili pepper, piri piri, cayenne pepper, spicy food LOVER 💜🌶 Even tho an acupuncturist suggested I chill with the hot peppers during summertime. But October 1st is technically fall so ... I'm going. #bbg #chilipepperfestival2017 #hotsauce #spicyfood

  • Mural painting at Malaika Beach Club ... a home away from home indeed. In 2001 while in Mali, West Africa, I traveled via pick-up truck nearly 21 hours to Djenne, the home of one of the oldest mosques. I would have continued on to Timbuktu but many foreigners had warned that the city was barren and unsafe. Today I wonder if those warnings came from a truthful or fear place...perhaps both. But my gut told me to stay in Djenne so that's what I did. Whenever I see any reference to this ancient capital, I reflect on that first trip to the Motherland alone. One of my most challenging yet enlightening trips...After a lengthy 2nd visit to East and South Africa, I'm back in NYC and feeling so grateful for the ability to travel, for new friends, for nature's healing powers and for love ❤️ and laughter. Feeling recharged. Looking forward to my next visit to Africa - Hugs and #happywhereamiwednesday #timbuktu #happywednesday #art #malaikabeachclub #mural #muralart #gratitude #africa #tanzania #kigamboni #nature #travel #eastafrica

The ambiance was delightfully cozy...we were the first customers of the night. Four of us in total. The food hit the spot ... lentil wot (stew), chickpeas, mushrooms, lamb...yum yum! And I had a few sips of honey wine too. Def coming back next trip! #africa #eastafrica #tanzania #addisindar #ethiopian #daressalaam #winterindar #wdiet #lentils #lamb #chickpeas #ethiopia
  • Someone ripped this cartoon clip from a Tanzanian newspaper (I think) ... an illustration depicting the state of youth in these here times. Notice the other character holding up the main dude.
