a stomach made of stone

by KalaLea on June 1, 2014 • Posted in Blog News The Act of Eating

Hello Beautiful Ones,

My recent interview with Brian, the passionate vegan, spurred some interests in the lifestyle. A good thing. However, a few people have made comments offline about their inability to stop eating meat and other non-vegan food items such as cheese and ice cream. After being a vegan for seven years, I totally get it. My belief is that not every one should lead a vegan lifestyle. Although, I can’t ignore the fact that

Brian, the passionate vegan

It was Easter Sunday. Not the ideal day for food shopping but I had just returned from an out of town excursion and had a hankering for some fruit and cereal. Seeing that I’m a petite woman, the Whole Foods employee yelled out, “let me know if you want me to grab something for you.” Two minutes had barely passed before I solicited his help and we began to discuss organic labeling and GMO crops.

bed stuy fresh and local (interview)

Food shopping in other neighborhoods can be frustrating, plus it takes a great deal of planning and time management; leaving little room for spontaneity. I feel compassion for those who live in food deserts and lack access to fresh and healthy food. Here’s an example of how two people changed their food game by sourcing fresh and local groceries for themselves and their surrounding community.

One afternoon while preparing lunch, I realized we were out of

#foodpoisoning

by KalaLea on March 24, 2014 • Posted in News Practicing Awareness The Act of Eating

Beautiful people, if you are eating and your head, heart or gut says to you, this tastes funny, weird, or disgusting, put the fork down immediately. Advice I should have adhered to last Sunday evening. I’m not going to mention names or places but I’m super sure that I got food poisoning from a mushroom, green bean dish that made my scalp tingle and my taste buds run for cover. At first bite, I was turned

building immunity

by KalaLea on February 25, 2014 • Posted in Blog News Preventative Health Care

God forbid, but just think if you had to have emergency surgery tomorrow, are you strong enough to be under the knife? If you had to run for your life, how far could you go without passing out? Are you equipped for marathon love making, let alone a marathon? Can you watch over a room full of sick children and return home symptom-free?

How well is your immune system functioning this season?

So far I’ve managed

to tell a lie

by KalaLea on December 29, 2013 • Posted in News Practicing Awareness
Imagine a world where people told the truth. Where honesty held court no matter the circumstance or consequence.
Would we be less fragile or more crazy? Would more people be their “true” selves? Un-afraid of ridicule or judgement? Would there be a need for Santa Claus?

Many moons ago, I used to catch myself telling lies:
Yeah, I’ve heard about that book.
I used to be the smartest girl in my class.
I’m sorry I’m late

  • Stone Town, Zanzibar is a beautiful hectic island with loads of character and spice but I'll admit it, the food at the night market gets only one star for hustle and charm. The food is far from fresh. However, the location is GORGEOUS BUT it's basically for tourists. Now I know! Feel free to share your local restaurant recommendations? #stonetown #zanzibar #nightmarket #africa #wdiet #winterindar

  • First time drinking baobab juice from the Baobab tree. It's a bit grainy with a tinge of tart and sweetness. The mighty Baobab tree can grow up to 90 feet tall for approximately 500 years. The powder from the fruit is rich in vitamin C, high in protein, potassium, calcium and magnesium. The fiber helps maintain healthy bacteria in the gut too and can tackle dysentery. #daressalaam #baobab #healthybody #healthyliving #healthyeating #africa #healingfoods
  • Yesterday after a swim in the Indian Ocean, I fell fast asleep right here. I could feel the earth laying hands on me.
