cheers

It wasn’t until a neighborhood man who went by the name of Tree said to me, “you drink just like your father” did I realize that my Dad had a reputation for knocking them back. I proudly smiled then agreed by saying, “Yep!” then kept on drinking. I think it was a summer afternoon, a childhood friend and I had been next door drinking Peach Schnapps on her porch. I was thirteen or fourteen years old;

just one

by KalaLea on November 20, 2013 • Posted in News Personal Connections

On Saturday, as I stepped off a BOLT bus in the City of Brotherly Love, a middle-aged brown man approached me as if he had something important to say. He moved closer and in a soft-spoken voice, he uttered, “taxi?”

I relaxed, realizing that he was simply peddling rides not street pharmaceuticals.

Famished, I accepted his offer while following him to the bronze-colored mini-van parked across the street. “Are you a real taxi?” I asked with

Friday night: On the way to see a film, a friend and I passed by the Nolita neighborhood for snacks. While waiting for the food, I sauntered over to the sweets section and picked up a package containing one peanut butter cookie. The name of the brand is called This Chick Bakes. This particular cookie was gluten-free. I asked the owner if she liked their cookies seeing that she was “gluten-intolerant.” (She had mentioned this earlier

blame it on bacon

by KalaLea on October 27, 2013 • Posted in News Practicing Awareness Preventative Health Care The Act of Eating

My appetite has been insatiable. I’ve been eating everything including the most incredible avocado BLT sandwich for lunch nearly two weeks ago. Yes people! I ate pork bacon and relished every bite.  But then I had a check-up Friday afternoon and my blood pressure was pretty elevated. We could blame it on the bacon but let’s not. It was as if somebody slapped me in the face. I left the doctor’s office feeling certain the results

you so crazy

by KalaLea on October 13, 2013 • Posted in News Practicing Awareness

I’ve done a lot of things that many would consider frightening…jumping out of a plane, traveling through West Africa alone, diving from cliffs into unknown waters …. even quitting my awesome job in order to move to Brasil. But the most frightening time of my life was the year after I sold my half of a restaurant/cafe business. Days before signing the legal papers, I bought a plane ticket to Bahia then stayed in Brazil for

joy in the small moments

by KalaLea on June 1, 2012 • Posted in Blog News Personal Connections Travel

There are many afternoons where I sit and watch birds do things I’ve only read in books. Time is lost on me and as I relax into my hammock and revel in the beauty of life, I am reminded of our connection to everything living. At night, I chaperon bugs onto the balcony so as not to disrupt my practice of ahimsa or non-violence. Ahimsa is the act or intention of doing no harm to others

  • During my farm stay in Bahia, Brazil years ago, I read the 1977 book, How to Save Your Own Life by Erica Jong. The other day I came across the notes I copied from the book: 1) Renounce useless guilt 2) Don't make a cult of suffering 3) Live in the NOW (or at least the soon) 4) Always do the thing you fear the most; courage is an acquired taste like caviar 5) Trust ALL joy 6) If the evil eye fixes you in its gaze; look elsewhere 7) Get ready to be 87 years old. So splendid. Happy Free Friday!! #selflove #sunshine #books #1977 #ericajong #ridingthewave #onlyyoucansaveyourownlife
