joy in the small moments

by KalaLea on June 1, 2012 • Posted in Blog News Personal Connections Travel

There are many afternoons where I sit and watch birds do things I’ve only read in books. Time is lost on me and as I relax into my hammock and revel in the beauty of life, I am reminded of our connection to everything living. At night, I chaperon bugs onto the balcony so as not to disrupt my practice of ahimsa or non-violence. Ahimsa is the act or intention of doing no harm to others

doo doo coco caca poo poo

by KalaLea on March 28, 2012 • Posted in News Personal Connections Travel

My gardening hoe is as shiny as a baby’s bottom. Two weeks shiny, that is. However, I can loosely summarize farming in four words: We are eating shit. Doo doo. Caca. Poo Poo. This essentially applies to those of us eating organic produce; fruits and veggies grown without the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and other synthetic chemicals. We eat it then it comes out of us then we use it to grow more food. A

Greetings and Happy One Year Anniversary to Why Did I Eat That? :)
Due to lack of internet service, I am more than one week behind with blogging. I spent my first week in Chapada Diamantina at the WWOOF-affiliated farm in Seabra but then had flee for a few reasons. Many of you already know this. Below is my account of my first few hours in the town where the farm is located. It’s sort of

be beautiful

by KalaLea on March 2, 2012 • Posted in News Personal Connections Travel

Where have you felt your most beautiful self?
What were you doing?
What were you wearing?
What does that feel like?
Please repeat after me: I am beautiful and perfect and lovely and alive. Thank you.

Besides the many reasons I’ve listed for being here, the music, culture, the warmth, the people, nature, there is another reason why I’m here. I feel my most beautiful self in Bahia. I feel vibrant and free and alive. And

every day is a gift

by KalaLea on February 29, 2012 • Posted in News Personal Connections Travel

For the previous two nights, I’ve hopped off the bus closest to where I’m staying then bolted home like a runaway slave.

Ready Set Go! Run KalaLea Run! Don’t look, just run!

See after 9 o’clock or so, the area becomes a nesting ground for the homeless and addicted. I don’t know from where they come but the vibe is sketchy at best. Emaciated men and women covered in last week’s soot lay on the streets,

Obrigada Pepa e Joรฃo

by KalaLea on February 26, 2012 • Posted in News Personal Connections Travel

Remember the ladies I met in Boipeba, Milena and Pepa? They left Boipeba several days before Fola and me; but before leaving, Pepa offered to let me stay with her and her husband, Joรฃo during the last few days of Carnival. This is another example of the open-ness and generosity of many of the people here … she barely knew me but yet she opened her home to me. When I asked her if she was

  • Dinner time in this part of the world. Think I'm addicted to the coconut cream sauce at Malaika Beach Club. Maybe I can get them to bottle it up for my travels :) #malaikabeachclub #coconut #dinnertime #wdiet #eastafrica #kigamboni
  • Rest in Power to Mr. Dick Gregory. His books and talks inspired me to ask questions, love myself and my people and dig deeper. If you can get your hands on his book, Natural Diet for Folks Who Eat: Cookin' With Mother Nature, it's a wonderful witty introduction to natural foods and the digestive system. Giving thanks to have lived in the same era as this phenomenal man. #dickgregory #naturalfood #book #healthbook #wdiet #cookbook #rip #activist #author #comedian #healthadvocate
  • What an adventure!!! After several attempts to find the local "KFC" spot, we made it last night with the help of four local friends. The kuku (Swahili) or chicken spot has been going strong for more than 30 years. The original owner passed down the biz to his grandson, Mfanyge, pictured here. Nearly every evening, Mfanyge sets up shop for a limited time in the evenings and only fries one big batch then closes shop abruptly. The key to finding its obscure location is to look for the wicker flame ๐Ÿ”ฅ I'm NOT a huge fan of chicken ๐Ÿ— but this was absolutely the juiciest and well seasoned chicken I've EVER eaten. He also adds a secret lime sauce to each piece. I woke this morning licking my fingers in search of any leftover juice embedded under my nails. The other images are of a couple food stalls in the surrounding area ... With limited light, vendors sell everything from fresh watermelon ๐Ÿ‰and avocado ๐Ÿฅ‘ slices to fried cassava and rice balls. The fried rice balls or kitumbuu were delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹ too. #KFC #africa #tanzania #chicken #friedchicken #market #riceball #watermelon #avocado #eastafrica #wdiet #foodstories #traveling #foodtravel #nightmarket
  • The inside of a graviola fruit aka #soursop #guanabana #custardapple or #Brazilianpawpaw The flesh is deliciously sweet ... but don't eat the seeds. Scientists have been studying the active compounds and chemicals in graviola since the 1940s. Compounds that have anti-tumorous properties ... still more research to do but some alternative healers use graviola to treat certain types of cancer. Always consult your doctor, if you're dealing with any major health issues. #tropicalfruit #graviola #fruit #tropical #cancer
  • Every one was born with a purpose. I truly believe this. I also believe that each one of us has the power to create beauty and make our world a better, more harmonious place by practicing small acts of love and kindness. #doyourbest #happyweekend #lifepurpose #purpose #love #eachoneteachone #bekind #beloving #nevergiveup #wdiet
  • Walking helps with the healing. It lightens loads, lifts spirits and calms the mind. Giving thanks for my legs and feet. Happy Friday ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ #africa #tanzania #walking #beach #happyfeet #happyfriday #healthybody #healthymind #traveling #eastafrica
  • The Swahili word for coconut is nazi ... it's the only nazi I support ... unless it means cheese ๐Ÿง€ in another language ๐Ÿ˜€Sooooo many benefits to drinking coconut water, eating the meat and I use coconut oil on my skin and my hair daily ... except when I'm beachin' it up. Shea butter is a better sunscreen for the skin. #coconut #swahili #traveling #africa #zanzibar #beach #coconutwater
