every day is a gift

For the previous two nights, I’ve hopped off the bus closest to where I’m staying then bolted home like a runaway slave.

Ready Set Go! Run KalaLea Run! Don’t look, just run!

See after 9 o’clock or so, the area becomes a nesting ground for the homeless and addicted. I don’t know from where they come but the vibe is sketchy at best. Emaciated men and women covered in last week’s soot lay on the streets,

Obrigada Pepa e João

Remember the ladies I met in Boipeba, Milena and Pepa? They left Boipeba several days before Fola and me; but before leaving, Pepa offered to let me stay with her and her husband, João during the last few days of Carnival. This is another example of the open-ness and generosity of many of the people here … she barely knew me but yet she opened her home to me. When I asked her if she was

5 apples for 60 cents

Yesterday, as I hopped on the Shopping Barra bus to make it home before dark, a woman promptly handed me her baby. She must have been 8 or 9 months old (the baby that is).

taking a bite out of bahia

by KalaLea on February 1, 2012 • Posted in News Travel

Somehow I’ve landed in Bahia, Brazil. Well, it’s no accident really. I’ve been planning this move for a couple of months now. Starting in March, I’ll begin working on an organic farm in a beautiful National Park called Chapada Diamantina. I found this farm via the WWOOF Brazil organization of which I’m a member. In exchange for 4-6 hours of farm work, I’ll receive free room & board. It’s time to take my relationship with

  • I used to have fish 🐟 and I love snorkeling. One of my next goals is to get a scuba diving license or certificate. The aquarium at Cape Town's V&A Waterfront was worth the visit. And I loved seeing the school children on tours react to the info shared about each beautiful creature. Learned so much! #southafrica #capetown #fish #aquarium #nemo #snorkeling #scubadiving

  • My tastebuds were seduced last night at an African restaurant along the Cape Town waterfront called Gold. After a 14 course meal, my belly cried, PLEASE NO MORE! From the first course, Zanzibar soup to the final dessert, Moroccan orange and walnut served with sweet orange and ground spice sauce, every dish was delish. The photos don't do the experience justice. Give thanks! #africa #southafrica #capetown #goldrestaurant #touristy #
  • There are many pizza spots in the city center of Cape Town 🍕and I'm trying my hardest to resist the begging call of CHEESE 🧀 I breathe so much better without it. #cheese #cheeselover #pizza #slice #walkonby #justsaynolala #staystrong #cheeseaddiction #capetown #southafrica #wdiet
