you so crazy

by KalaLea on October 13, 2013 • Posted in News Practicing Awareness

I’ve done a lot of things that many would consider frightening…jumping out of a plane, traveling through West Africa alone, diving from cliffs into unknown waters …. even quitting my awesome job in order to move to Brasil. But the most frightening time of my life was the year after I sold my half of a restaurant/cafe business. Days before signing the legal papers, I bought a plane ticket to Bahia then stayed in Brazil for

be beautiful

by KalaLea on March 2, 2012 • Posted in News Personal Connections Travel

Where have you felt your most beautiful self?
What were you doing?
What were you wearing?
What does that feel like?
Please repeat after me: I am beautiful and perfect and lovely and alive. Thank you.

Besides the many reasons I’ve listed for being here, the music, culture, the warmth, the people, nature, there is another reason why I’m here. I feel my most beautiful self in Bahia. I feel vibrant and free and alive. And

taking a bite out of bahia

by KalaLea on February 1, 2012 • Posted in News Travel

Somehow I’ve landed in Bahia, Brazil. Well, it’s no accident really. I’ve been planning this move for a couple of months now. Starting in March, I’ll begin working on an organic farm in a beautiful National Park called Chapada Diamantina. I found this farm via the WWOOF Brazil organization of which I’m a member. In exchange for 4-6 hours of farm work, I’ll receive free room & board. It’s time to take my relationship with

Recipe by KalaLea
Serves 4-6 seekers of all things bright and light!

I’m in a very green mood these days — my awareness is heightened and I am practicing saying YES to what life offers me. If you couldn’t tell by now, kale is my favorite leafy green vegetable. Read the other posts to find out what makes kale a must-eat-veggie.

What You Need:
1 bunch of kale (feel free to use 1/2 for less people)

Gourmet Pizza (4 options)

by KalaLea on April 18, 2011 • Posted in Kala's Favorites

Pizza! I totally love it. I could honestly eat it every single day but I don’t because pizza doesn’t necessarily love me. Due to my allergies to mold, ragweed, and pollen, my monthly pizza quota is 2 slices. However, this month, I’ve gone ΓΌber overboard. Blame it on the weather; gloomy days and rain evoke pizza eating. I’ve been a bad girl but I’m back to my senses now.

I have not one but 3 recommendations

the number 9

by KalaLea on March 15, 2011 • Posted in News

During a staff meeting yesterday, I asked a hand full of women if they knew how to tell organic produce from conventional produce. Five out of five said, No, how?

The number 9.

Go get a piece of produce and check the label or code on the sticker. If it contains five digits starting with the number 9 then according to the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 (OFPA), this item was produced organically without the

  • Dinner time in this part of the world. Think I'm addicted to the coconut cream sauce at Malaika Beach Club. Maybe I can get them to bottle it up for my travels :) #malaikabeachclub #coconut #dinnertime #wdiet #eastafrica #kigamboni
  • Rest in Power to Mr. Dick Gregory. His books and talks inspired me to ask questions, love myself and my people and dig deeper. If you can get your hands on his book, Natural Diet for Folks Who Eat: Cookin' With Mother Nature, it's a wonderful witty introduction to natural foods and the digestive system. Giving thanks to have lived in the same era as this phenomenal man. #dickgregory #naturalfood #book #healthbook #wdiet #cookbook #rip #activist #author #comedian #healthadvocate
  • What an adventure!!! After several attempts to find the local "KFC" spot, we made it last night with the help of four local friends. The kuku (Swahili) or chicken spot has been going strong for more than 30 years. The original owner passed down the biz to his grandson, Mfanyge, pictured here. Nearly every evening, Mfanyge sets up shop for a limited time in the evenings and only fries one big batch then closes shop abruptly. The key to finding its obscure location is to look for the wicker flame πŸ”₯ I'm NOT a huge fan of chicken πŸ— but this was absolutely the juiciest and well seasoned chicken I've EVER eaten. He also adds a secret lime sauce to each piece. I woke this morning licking my fingers in search of any leftover juice embedded under my nails. The other images are of a couple food stalls in the surrounding area ... With limited light, vendors sell everything from fresh watermelon πŸ‰and avocado πŸ₯‘ slices to fried cassava and rice balls. The fried rice balls or kitumbuu were delicious πŸ˜‹ too. #KFC #africa #tanzania #chicken #friedchicken #market #riceball #watermelon #avocado #eastafrica #wdiet #foodstories #traveling #foodtravel #nightmarket
  • The inside of a graviola fruit aka #soursop #guanabana #custardapple or #Brazilianpawpaw The flesh is deliciously sweet ... but don't eat the seeds. Scientists have been studying the active compounds and chemicals in graviola since the 1940s. Compounds that have anti-tumorous properties ... still more research to do but some alternative healers use graviola to treat certain types of cancer. Always consult your doctor, if you're dealing with any major health issues. #tropicalfruit #graviola #fruit #tropical #cancer

  • The Swahili word for coconut is nazi ... it's the only nazi I support ... unless it means cheese πŸ§€ in another language πŸ˜€Sooooo many benefits to drinking coconut water, eating the meat and I use coconut oil on my skin and my hair daily ... except when I'm beachin' it up. Shea butter is a better sunscreen for the skin. #coconut #swahili #traveling #africa #zanzibar #beach #coconutwater
